'Transformers': One Way It's Kind of Brilliant

Few would argue Michael Bay's Transformers franchise is for intellectuals or cinephiles.

They are critically reviled, written off as overstuffed and incoherent mish-moshes of extravagant explosions, loud noises, product placements, scantily clad women and terrible dialogue. (Anyone remember John Tutturo uttering the line "I am directly below enemy scrotum" in Revenge of The Fallen?)

But there’s one aspect of the series that doesn’t get enough credit  — and it is actually kind of brilliant. It's the franchises reliance on a popular bastion of fiction known as secret histories, a concept that it's used to justify the perpetuation of this franchise »

Weekend Box Office: 'Transformers 5' No Knight in Shining Armor

Showing signs of rust, Paramount and director Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight is doing tepid business at the North American box office.

The big-budget summer tentpole, opening Wednesday and directed by Bay, is headed for a five-day domestic debut of $64 million-$65 million, well behind any of the previous four installments in the toy-turned-film franchise.

That will include a Friday-Sunday take of roughly $40.5 million, a dismal showing considering box-office blockbuster Wonder Woman is projected to earn $26 million all the way in its fourth weekend. On Friday, Warner Bros. and helmer Patty Jenkins' superhero film became »

'The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin': Film Review | Provincetown 2017

The key paradox to emerge from Jennifer M. Kroot's The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin is that the counterculture-era Dickens of San Francisco's Lgbt community was the son of an unapologetic white supremacist, whose connections helped him land his first TV writing gig, working for arch conservative Jesse Helms, of all people. Few readers devouring Maupin's cherished Tales of the City books can have guessed that the creator of Anna Madrigal, the enigmatic, weed-smoking trans landlady of 28 Barbary Lane, was in fact the great-great-grandson of a Confederate general who became a congressman in order to defend his slave-owner rights.
